When the “Japanese Knitting Stitch Bible; 260 Exquisite Patterns by Hitomi Shida” was released in 2017, I could not wait to design a shawl with these perfectly delicate stitch designs. Looking through the book was like looking through a coffee table art book, it was simply stunning. It didn’t take me long to start swatching! A collaboration with Anzula Luxury Fibers, Riverton is my first exploration into using Japanese stitch patterns and variations to create an exquisite rectangular shawl with timeless movement and fluidity.

This project is a collaboration with Anzula Luxury Fibers. I used their Lunaris Fingering Yarn (80% Superwash Merino, 10% cashmere and 10% stellina) in the colorway “Frankie.” Anzula Luxury Fibers is available at select retail yarn stores. Whichever yarn you chose to work with, I will suggest that you pick a yarn that has some stellina. Riverton is intended to mimic flowing water and the stellina really adds to this affect beautifully by looking like sparkling water. Feel free to also experiment and use a lace weight yarn or even a heavier sport weight, but please keep in mind if you make changes you will need to adjust your yardage accordingly. The sample was only done in Fingering Weight only.

Difficulty: Intermediate - the body of Riverton is made up of k, p, k2tog, ssk, YO, and CDD stitches. The Intermediate Label is because this lace pattern is created by knitting lace on both sides of your work. Not only is there no purl row or “rest” row the K2tog and SSK’s are knitted backwards on the reverse side. Riverton is a great knit for both advanced beginning knitters and experienced knitters alike.
