Rockhopper
The Rockhopper shawl is one of 11 engaging patterns from Penguin: a Knit Collection by Anna Maltz - a printed book packed with patterns, photographs, illustrations and stories, all inspired by penguins. Available from annamaltz.com and your LYS.
An unusual construction: this triangular shawl is a series of descending steps utilising mitred corners, which the contrast edging hops along while filling in. The shawl is worked flat, in loose garter stitch, using three colours. Eyelets are placed at the transition between the two main colours, as they are striped, to disguise the change, add interest and make the shawl reversible. The third colour is picked up and worked with simple short rows for an extra-bright pop of colour. Written instructions are given in sections, row-by-row, alongside general theory as to what happens when and why.
SIZE
One size
Longest edge: 182cm / 71½ ”
Drop (point to centre of longest edge): 84cm / 33”
YARN
Snældan 1-ply
(Laceweight; 100% wool; 720m / 787yds per 100g)
A: Charcoal x 1
B: Fleece White x 1
C:Viking Gold x 1
Note: natural colours of Snældan are sold in 100g skeins and dyed colours in 50g skeins. If substituting yarn you will need about 380m / 415yds in colour A, 350m / 382yds in colour B and 200m / 219yds in colour C.
TENSION
18 sts x 36 rows = 10cm / 4” over garter stitch on 3.75mm needles after blocking
SUGGESTED NEEDLES
3.75mm (US 5/UK 9) circular needle, 80cm / 32” length
Note: As Rockhopper is worked flat, there is a lot of flexibility regarding the needles’ length to use. A circular needle longer than 60cm is ideal. Straight needles will also work, but you will see much less of the progress you make, as they will not be long enough to stretch out the full length of stitches when you first start knitting the shawl.
