The Rose of Provins shawl is knit from the top down. The design progresses from a textured centre reminiscent of stamens, through wavy rib outlining of petals, returning to a textured edging, all linked with chains of leaves. There are few rest rows and the stitch number changes constantly, resulting in an organic flowing design. Don’t let that put you off, the pattern stitches worked on the wrong side are intuitive (e.g. knit stitches in the ribbing section, p2tog in a continuous line of decreases) and the result is worth the effort!
