Rose Window Sweater
Rose Window is a circular yoke sweater with a mosaic print, inspired by gothic architecture in general and traditional round windows of high gothic cathedrals in particular.
It is knit bottom up in the round, starting with the main body and 2 sleeves separately (ribbed hem/ cuffs and main part in stockinette), which are then connected into 1 piece to work the 2-color yoke. You finish with the neckband of your choice: either I-cord trim, or a double-layer ribbed turtle-neck.
Smallest children sizes worked with an I-cord are knit with a button closure to make putting it on easier.
It also features raised back (for all sizes) and horizontal bust darts (for adult sizes 3-14 only, optional) - worked with short-rows - for anatomic fit.
Sizes - the pattern includes a total of 22 sizes:
- 8 children (from 1 y.o. to 13-15 y.o.)
- 14 adult (intended for own bust of 80-153 cm / 32-60” with ~2”of positive ease) See schenatic and further details on measurements & yardage per size in the pattern photos.
Yarn
Fingering weight wool (380-420m/415-455 yds per 100g/3.5oz) in 2 colors: main (MC) + contrast color (CC).
I do NOT recommend using 100% superwash merino or alpaca as those might sag considerably in wear. Choose yarns with little halo (‘fuzz’) to best show off the mosaic print. You can use a solid / tonal or slow gradient yarn (for both MC and CC), but I would avoid highly variegated as it might “muddy” the print.
The sample was knit out of Glafira’s Yarn Feodosiia (100% lambswool; 230m/250yds per 50g/1.8oz, woolen-spun) in colorways Flannel Grey (023) for MC and Pompeii (066) for CC.
Needles
You will need a total of 3 sizes:
- Main: 3.5-4mm/US4-6 (or size to get stockinette gauge) circulars on a 40-100cm/16-40” cable, depending on the size worked + DPNs or 22cm/9” circulars for the sleeves (if you prefer knitting sleeves on magic loop, use 0.25mm/ 1 US size larger needles);
- Print and ribbing: 3-3.5mm/US 2.5-4 (or 0.5mm/2 US sizes smaller than main) circulars on same length cable as main for the hem, yoke and neckband (+ DPNs/ short circulars for the cuffs, if you prefer them to magic loop);
- Cast-on: 2.75-3mm/US2-2.5 (or 0.25mm/1 US size smaller than your print needles) on same cable length as the main ones for the hem (+DPNs/ short circulars for the cuffs, if you prefer them to magic loop).
Notions: waste yarn / extra cable/ stitch holders, stitch markers, row counter (optional), tape measure, tapestry needle, scissors; children sizes up to & including 6-7 y.o. with I-cord neckline trim – 1 ~8-12mm/ ¼-½” button.
Gauge in 10x10cm/4x4” square, knit in the round; after wet blocking:
- Stockinette: 24 stitches by 34 rows – on main needles;
- Print: 26 stitches by 60 rows – on print needles.
