SKILL LEVEL:

Advanced: For the adventurous crocheter who loves to tackle something a bit more complicated. Skills/concepts include basic increases and decreases, using bobbles and color changes, and picking up stitches for the change from collar to body.

Notes from the Designer:

“Royal” is a word that makes you feel the magnificence of the style. Since I became interested in fashion, I was impressed by epaulettes that have graced the shoulders on military jackets and capes. I wished to be able to sew these designs in the distinctive shape I wanted.

I told myself, since I am a designer, why don’t I make the same idea but in a new way? The idea of a cape with removable, embellished shoulders came to my mind, and I set to designing it right away. I used front and back post double crochet stitches to create the 3D leaf shape. This added extra texture and interest to the cape. You can wear it in winter over a beautiful dress for attending formal occasions, or wear it with a blouse with jeans for just hanging out with friends.

• The Ssc counts as a dc throughout the pattern.
• When changing colors, finish last ‘yo pull through’ of the previous stitch with the new color. This will maintain clean lines.
• Always carry the MC yarn to the WS.
• Carry the CC yarn to the RS, and trap the carrying strand with the body of the first stitch.
• Stitches to be worked in the CC will appear in pink text.
• Each stem and leaf motif on the body is worked using a pre-measured bobble of the CC. Carry the MC behind those stitches (to the WS), trapping it every two stitches for longer spans. After working the stitches on each motif, drop the CC, and do not carry. It will be in the correct position for the next row.
• CC bobbles will vary between 2.0 and 2.5 g (8-10 yds).
• When working with the bobbles for the body, keep the MC under the CC, except when trapping it. When changing from CC to MC, bring MC up from under the CC. When changing from MC to CC, always keep the CC over the MC. This will keep the MC recessed on the sides of the motifs and allow the CC to appear as if it is floating above the background.
• Pay close attention to stitch counts, as front and back post stitches can be tricky to read.
• When working Leaf Rows 8-11, be careful to work around the previous row’s decreases as a single stitch.
