Here’s a really different twist on the traditional ripple afghan strip! From 1892 Butterick’s The Art of Knitting, p.65, this pattern was originally used for a winter petticoat, knitted from the top down.
The pattern instructions are symmetrical around the center cable. There are 36 stitches in the strip and a 6-row repeat with 2 set-up rows. If preferred, use yarn overs instead of the make-ones. If you’re working the make-ones, I recommend increasing needle size; the make-ones are on top of each other every other row and the stitches become tight in that spot.

Skills needed: cast on, slip, knit, purl, YO, k2tog, p2tog, M1, M1p, cable and bind off in knit stitch.

Gauge is not important in this pattern. Any block-able yarn/thread will work. Make a swatch to check gauge and appearance.

66 yards of Cascade Yarns’ ReFine yarn will make 10 inches of a 36-stitch-wide strip at gauge.
