Nothing makes a winter outfit quite as season-appropriate as a nice bonnet with ruffles! Come for style and stay for substance - this hat is not just cute and fun but also warm and comfortable :) It covers the ears nicely and stays in place thanks to the ties.

Worked at a worsted weight gauge, the bonnet is a pretty fast knit. Ruffles are both pleated and cabled to ensure they fold at even intervals. Ties are knitted in as you go. Cable pattern is easy to memorize and provides a snug fit with just a proper amount of stretch (this section is both written out and charted). The side edging is worked in garter stitch along with the rest of the hat. The back of the head is shaped with short rows to guarantee a comfortable fit - and an extra cute pixie point.

The pattern is graded to fit a variety of sizes from newborn to adult, because we believe that everyone deserves a good bonnet!

  • Suggested fit: 0-3m (3-12m, 1-3y, 3-6y, 6-12y) (teen, adult small, medium, large)

  • 21 sts and 30 rows in 4” / 10cm in stockinette stitch, blocked
  • 28 sts and 34 rows in 4” / 10cm in cabled pattern, blocked

Construction

  • The bonnet is knit flat from the ruffles towards the back of the head.
  • The ruffles are worked in 8x5 rib, then pleated and cabled to make them ruffle at designated intervals.
  • Several decrease rows transition to the main pattern, and the ties are created here using the cast on and bind off method.
  • The body of the hat is worked in a simple cabled panel with the garter stitch side edging.
  • Once the desired length is reached, the back of the head is shaped with short rows.
  • The hat is blocked and seamed at the back.
