Back in October 2017 I was sent a ball of Blacker Yarns Brushwork to review for Olann and. I really liked the yarn and rather than knit a little swatch, I tried to come up with something else.

The shade we’d been sent was Craquelure, a lovely rustic green, so my immediate thought was trees, leaves or something similar. Around the same time, I was trying to plan ahead and work out what to knit for the Knitorious Knitters Secret Santa.

Rustic Christmas Trees - perfect!

I meant to post the pattern here last year but didn’t get round to it. A reader of my blog mentioned the trees to me recently and as it’s nearly Christmas again.

Blacker Yarns Brushwork, was released to celebrate their 12th birthday and is no longer available. Double knit yarn and 3mm needles work perfectly and the finished trees are only a fraction larger.

MATERIALS
For each tree

Yarn: Sport Weight 13 metres/15 yards

Shown In: Blacker Yarns Limited Edition Brushwork Colour: Craquelure 50g = 152 metres/165 yards (Scottish Bowmont/Castlemilk Moorit/Alpaca).

Needles: 2.5mm

Notions: Tapestry needle

TENSION/GAUGE
38 sts x 32 rows = 10 x 10 cm with 2.5 mm in garter stitch

SIZE
Each tree measures 10cm/4” from base to top by 7.5cm/3” at its widest point.

You can make the trees using any weight of yarn, but be sure to use a needle one size smaller than what is recommended. For example, if the recommended needle is a 4mm, you should use a 3mm. You want the trees to be firm, which helps them to resist curling.
