Safari and Savannahs Not-A-Poncho
This design is part of a three-pattern 26-page guide. See bottoim photos for other designs in collection.
Bring out your inner grrr. Asymmetrical, free-spirited and easy to knit, this topper is perfectly at home over jeans or someplace wilder. Embellish, enhance, and set free your spirit of artistic adventure by beading or crocheting interesting additions to the slanted edge.
I used Mango Moon Dharma and Chakra, Hand Maiden’s Mulberry Tussah Silk, linen, rayon, handspuns, cotton, tapes and ribbons. A starter kit is available for this design on my web site, janethornley.com KITS.
Not into earth colors? Turn your wilder self into jewel tones enlivened by the brilliant hues of African butterflies and birds – ruby, cobalt blue, electric green. Every color imaginable is worn by a living creature in Africa.
Though the basic shape is akin to Ocean Streams Not-A-Poncho, this version is knit on smaller needles and is less voluminous. The stitches, however, are just as uncomplicated: knit, purl, and simple yarnovers-knit-two-togethers create textural adventure. Additional swathes of random lace (randomized yarn overs with corresponding knit-two-togethers later in the row) create a lacy weight and feel without struggling over charts. Some intarsia is necessary to create the asymmetrical color slants in the lower half, however.
The chart serves only as a guide indicating how to make the diagonal animal stripes running along the lower half of the piece. Otherwise, since this is free-range knitting, the idea is not to follow but lead.
