SAILOR SOFT is worked in stockinette stitch with stripes worked in a slipped stitch pattern.

The slipped stitch pattern is straightforward. In this project, what looks like a stranded pattern is knitted with one color at a time, lowering the difficulty level.

The sweater has a simple silhouette with the shoulder line pushed forward. The sweater is worked seamlessly from the top down. First, the neck rib edge is worked in the round, then short rows are worked to shape the neckline, and then the work is continued in the round until the total shoulder width is achieved. After this, the work is divided into front and back sections, and each section is worked back and forth separately to the bottom of the armholes. Here the sections are joined again, and the body is worked in the round until it is again divided at the hem, and each section is worked separately back and forth to form the slits along the sides. Stitches for the sleeves are picked up and knitted along the armholes, and short rows are worked to shape the top of the sleeve. The sleeves are then worked in the round on a circular needle to the cuffs.

One of my followers pointed out that the stripes on Sailor Soft look
like people standing side by side holding hands. I love the idea of this particular detail!

From the beginning of my work process, with the soft, warm
embrace of a sweater, I wanted to knit a piece that is both enjoyable to create and, with each stitch, sends a warm thought to someone in need of help.

This knitting pattern includes a wide variety of tutorials
demonstrating the techniques used. So, you might think that it is
more difficult than my others; in fact, it is quite the opposite. With this pattern, I hope everyone will enjoy knitting Sailor Soft, whether you are an experienced knitter or less skilled.*

How much positive ease you like in your clothes varies from person to person. A useful tip is to measure some of your favorite sweaters to help you choose the perfect size. If you have a curvy silhouette, I’d recommend going with less positive ease. I have a more straight up-and-down silhouette, and for myself I like this type of sweater a bit oversized, so I’ve chosen to knit my SAILOR SOFT with 37 cm of positive ease.
