If your neck tends towards being chilly in the winter, Saltholm Cowl is your new best friend. Work it plain for an easier route or add some fair isle stranding if you are a more advanced knitter. Either way, the work will end up lovely!

Sizes: X Small (Small, Medium, Large) (X Large, XX Large) to fit a neck circumference up to 12” (14”, 16”, 18”) (20”, 22”)/30.5 (35.5, 40.5, 45.5) (51, 56) cm.

Yarn: 225 (250, 275, 300) (325, 350) yards/205 (230, 250, 275) (300, 320) meters of DK weight yarn, in one or two colors (50% in main color and contrast; you may alternately use just one color).

Please remember that this is an estimate only; it is always advisable to have a little extra yarn on hand.

Sample shown in Viking Fiber Company Nornir DK colorways Blood Oath and Herbs of Seidr.

Needles: Size US 7/4.5 mm circular needles with a long cable, or size needed to obtain gauge, spare needles of a smaller size, and 2 double-point needles 1 – 2 sizes smaller than the gauge needles (for i-cord making, can substitute a Cordsmith or other i-cord maker).

Gauge: 18 sts and 28 rows = 4”/10 cm square in Stockinette stitch on larger needles. Use contrast yarn for gauge swatch to keep 50% yardage balance for each color.

Notions: Crochet hook (for cast on), 2 – 10 locking stitch markers or safety pins, one medium size safety pin, i-cord maker (like a Cordsmith, optional), blocking wires and t-pins.

Techniques: Crochet provisional cast on, casting on at the end of a row (backwards loop or other preferred method), advanced colorwork with chart (optional), 3-needle bind off, basic decreases, stretchy bind off and i-cord making in preferred method.

There is a video tutorial for the casing and finishing of this cowl.
