SAND DOLLAR ROUND:
The overlaying theme is that of a sand dollar. The splits you see in a sand dollar are achieved with dropped stitches and the simple lace and texture makes the starfish shape and some decorative scrolls. As is often the case, this pattern was born out of another idea in which I got stuck. I used this project to find my way out of being stuck. Lo and behold, here is a glorious throw, (or wrap, or baby blanket) in gorgeously dyed cotton yarn.

YARN:
This was my first experience with the “Galatea”, and I am very impressed with the yarn. The design is meant to be worked in Bulky weight yarn. I have used cotton for my version, but it would work well in other fibers. I also think this would be a fun project in different weights too. If changing up the yarn, you will need to estimate yardage. I would suggest using the needle size recommended on the yarn ball band. If using a thinner yarn, you should need LESS than what I used for the bulky version. I think it would make an amazing small round rug. I may be knitting one in worsted weight to see how it comes out. I had VERY LITTLE YARN LEFT OVER. You may wish to purchase an additional skein to be safe.

URTH YARNS - galatea, 100% Cotton, 95 yards / 100g Hand Dyed Stripes, Color #2094 (x8) - left over 10 g

NEEDLES & GAUGE:
US 11’s/8.0 mm round needles. Since the project widens in the round you can either start with DPN’s and then switch to round needles or use magic loop. I used interchangeable needles with varying length cables for different parts of this piece.
GAUGE uses US 11’s/8.0 mm in stocking knit, before and after blocking was the same. (gauge listed above)

SIZE:
With Minimal blocking (basically shaping) it is about 52” (1.33 m) DIAMETER.
I did not hard block or try to significantly open up the lace.

NOTIONS:
A yarn sewing needle for sewing & tucking in some ends. Markers, some removable.
