Starting with a center square knit in the round, this large wrap then grows in opposite directions to form a rectangle. One or two main colors are accented with wavy insets of a lighter-weight yarn knit in a simple lace pattern.
Skills required:
• Circular cast-on (see links to some methods to try in the planning thread)
• Knitting in the round
• Increasing
• Decreasing
• Yarn overs
• Backwards-loop cast-on
Yarn:
• For the medium-sized wrap (70” x 18”), you will need 1000 yards of one or two colors (equal amounts of each), plus 135 yards of lace-weight in a coordinating color.
• For the larger wrap (80” x 18”), you will need 1130 yards of one or two colors (580 of one and 550 of the other), plus 150 yards of lace-weight in a coordinating color.
There are lots of yarn options at this gauge. One sample was knit in Brooklyn Tweed Arbor (DK) and one in Madelinetosh Tosh Merino Light (single ply fingering). Basically any yarn that gives you a nice fabric at the given gauge will work. It is a large wrap, and lofty yarns like Arbor or single-ply fingering yarns like Tosh Merino Light work really well. A fingering-weight wrap will be light and airy, a DK-weight wrap will be more cozy. There’s more discussion about yarn choices (colors, weights, fibers) in the planning thread.
Color choices:
The idea behind this design was low-contrast, soothing, beachy colors. I used Brooklyn Tweed Arbor in Degas and Driftwood and Vale in Arabesque for the larger wrap. For the smaller wrap, I used madelinetosh Tosh Merino Light Whiskers and Knit Picks Shadow in Basalt. I do recommend that you choose two main colors that are close in value (light vs. dark). You can also use the same color for both MC1 and MC2. Your coordinating color (the laceweight) can be as low- or high-contrast as you like. If you know you want a really eye-catching, graphic wrap, go with any 3 colors that make you happy, but I’d recommend swatching them together to make sure the combo works.
Notions:
• Depending on the circular cast-on method you choose, you may need a crochet hook in a size compatible with your gauge needles or a bit smaller
• US 7/4.5 mm 24-inch circular needles, or size needed to obtain gauge or a nice fabric
• Set of 5 US 6/4 mm dpns (or 2 circulars or long circular for magic loop), or one size smaller than your gauge needles
• US 6/4 mm straight or circular needles, or one size smaller than your gauge needles
• Stitch markers
• Tapestry needle for weaving in ends
