Mitered knitting is a simple and soothing way to create a geometric design that requires minimal weaving of ends, especially when using a self-striping yarn. I was looking for a way to create a table runner for everyday use. Substituting another yarn could easily elevate this project to a more formal runner.

The decreases in the mitered squares remind me of the ripples in the sand, made from the waves washing in and out. It leaves rivulets as the tide creeps up and recedes, leaving concentric marks as each wave progresses and retreats.

If using a non-superwash wool, you can make a magic ball with felted joins out of a variety of leftover yarn of similar weights. The result would be colorful and use a considerable amount of stash at the same time. I chose a rustic yarn that is a wool blended with mohair and silk, but with enough wool/mohair content to allow for felted joins.

This table runner is super customizable. It can be made wider, narrower, shorter, or longer to suit your specific needs by adding or subtracting squares from the length or width. You may also wish to make your border narrower or wider by changing the number of rows worked.

This design is ideal for newer knitters, but would make a relaxing knit for more seasoned knitters who might like it for TV knitting. This design is also a good skill builder for newer knitters who might like to stretch their knowledge with the range of skills used in this design.

Details:

Yarn Used:

Noro Yarns Silk Garden (45% Silk / 45% Kid Mohair/ 10% Lamb’s Wool), 109 yds / 100m, 1.75 oz / 50g) per skein.
The color 359 was used for this project.

Yardage:
549-671 yds / 502-613.5m

Yardage estimates include 10% +/- those used in the sample.

Needles:
US 8 (5.00mm) circular, 16” / 41cm
US 8 (5.00mm) circular, 60” / 152.5cm

Note: I used two circulars of this size, one for each half of the border for ease of knitting.

Notions:
Four stitch markers (4) for corners of border – 3 of one color, 1 alternate color to mark beg of border.
Tapestry needle

Gauge:
14 sts and 27 rows = 4” / 10cm for Garter Stitch (swatch on US 8 needles).

Size:
One size that can be adjusted to suit personal preference.

Special Techniques:
Mitered square knitting
Knitting in the round
Decreases using k2tog and ssk
Increases using kfb

Final Measurements:
53.75” / 136.5cm x 17.5” / 44.5cm
