Sand Timer Tunic
This tunic is inspired by a sand timer shape, creating a bold, color-blocked look that works as an easy to wear outer garment for woodland walks or lazing at home. I love the way ponchos are quick and easy to throw on without bunching up sleeves, full skirts etc. and don’t need buttoning up like a coat. But they can catch on everything and blow around in windy weather, so I sought to design something similar but secure at the waist to prevent that. This is a comfortable, relaxed garment that’s easy to wear indoors or out and an easy way to pick up on the shapelier silhouettes seen returning to the catwalk in the last few seasons. The use of alpine stitch and the simple shaping of the top make this achievable for a confident crocheter taking the first steps in clothes making, while the unusual construction could still pique the interest of more experienced garment makers.
Row gauge is different for sleeves because the weight and stitch direction can pull on the Alpine stitch fabric, making it somewhat longer. This gauge difference could be less noticeable in smaller sizes from the range and more noticeable in larger sizes.
14 sts = 4 “; 14 rows = 4” after blocking, for Peplum and Bodice, where rows are vertical
14 sts = 4”; 12 rows = 4” after blocking, for sleeves, where rows are horizontal
This is a really flexible garment, enabling it to work with many different outfits for a wide range of scenarios.
