Sapore di sale

Sapore di Sale is a very famous song by Gino Paoli, one of the great Italian song writers.
It is among the songs my mother loves and that soundtracked my childhood, when I would listen to her 45s on my small red portable record-player.
Sapore di Sale means “taste of salt”, and the lyrics continue with: “Sapore di sale, Sapore di Mare”: taste of salt, taste of the sea.
This song is a typical Italian song celebrating summer and sea, so interconnected for all Italians. The endless sunny days, the hot sand, the fresh sea, the colourful lines of beach umbrellas..
The parasols on a typical Italian beach are striped, like a bigger version of this light and effortless shawl: an ode to summer in every sense.
