Sara Head Scarf
Summertime means biking to the beach, convertible rides,
camping, festivals… so many ways to feel the wind in your
hair! Tame your wild summer mane with this cute kerchief!
Puff stitches are scattered across a reversible open lace
stitch pattern, making for a fun, first-time lace project.
This kerchief begins at the bottom tip and is worked back
and forth in turned rows, increasing along the edges to create
the triangle shape. After the triangle is complete, an edging is
worked along the two shorter sides of the triangle (in turned
rows) to create the scalloped border. Ties and the simple
single crochet edging across the top of the kerchief complete
this project – all without joining a new piece of yarn, making
for speedy finishing with only 2 ends to weave in.
Choose a width that is equal to or smaller than your head
circumference (measure around your head at the point
where you would like to wear the kerchief, including any
ease you need for your hair). Think about whether you
want the kerchief corners to touch (or be close to touching)
when tied, or if a gap between points (connected by the ties)
is preferred.
When kerchief is blocked, it is easy to add some additional
length and width to the triangle by blocking it more
aggressively. For the sample shown, the kerchief was made
in the medium size and measured 18.5” across top edge, not
including ties. This measurement was increased by 1” to 19.5”
across when wet-blocked. It is better to make a smaller
kerchief than to make one that is too large because the ties
can increase the circumference of the kerchief when it is tied
in place around the head.
