Scandinavian Ski-Sweater
Originally published in 1959, in Newsletter #2. Second edition published in Winter 1968. Also found in Chapter 3 of Knitting Without Tears, and in the PBS production of The Busy Knitter 2 (1967)
“One-of-a-kind Scandinavian sweaters. Design and make your own on circular needles.”
Drop shoulder, stranded colorwork, steek the armhole and sew (!) in the sleeve.
Materials, for a sweater 40” around, approximately 27” long:
6-7 skeins 2-ply Sheepswool, 5 sts to 1” - medium weight sweater
7-8 skeins Fisherman Yarn, 5 sts to 1” - medium weight sweater
7-8 skeins 3-ply Sheepswool, 4 sts to 1” - heavy sweater
6-7 wheels Icelandic doubled, 4 sts to 1” - heavy, lovely and unusual sweater
8-9 skeins 4-ply Sheepswool, 3.5 sts to 1” - very heavy sweater
8-9 skeins Sheepsdown, 3 sts to 1” - extra thick, but not too heavy sweater
One 24” and one 16” needle (circular) of a size to give YOU the above gauges. Yarn proportions are about 1/3 pattern color and 2/3 background color.
