This traditional hap is knitted in laceweight cashmere yarn, making it a real heirloom to be treasured for years to come.

The classic construction begins with a central square which is worked diagonally in garter stitch. Stitches are then picked-up and knitted outwards in the round in a pretty Shetland lace pattern, then my self-designed edging border is worked in short rows around the lace edging to bind off the piece.

The pattern includes written instructions and a small chart for the edging border.

I designed this shawl when sailing from Northumberland to the West Coast of Scotland. The lace border pattern reminds me of images of the sea when viewed from the boat, while the edging border resembles breaking waves as they reach dry land.

The shawl can be made in a single shade from 4 x 50gm Yarntelier Cashmere Lace, although the featured coastal shades add a fun modern element to the design. This shawl is going to be a treasured piece for my family, with its first outing planned to be a Christening shawl in the very near future!
