For this cardigan, we have been inspired by the plants that Stina has been working on during her PhD studies in Uppsala. Selaginella is the scientific name for spikemosses, an old plant group dating back some 350 million years. Despite their name, spikemosses are lycophytes, not mosses.

The cardigan is knitted from the bottom up with a structure pattern at the fronts. The back and the sleeves are in stockinette stitch. You knit the body in one piece back and forth until you reach the underarm, where you divide the work in back and fronts. After joining the shoulders, stitches are picked up around the armholes and the sleeve caps are made with short rows. Details are a hem designed to match the structure pattern at the fronts, an i-cord edging around the neck, and phoney seams in the sides of the body and on the sleeves.

The yarn used for the cardigans in the photos is hand dyed. A short description on how we usually do natural dyeing with plants is included in the pattern.
