The lace pattern used for these socks is named for the selions or ridges of the open-field system used in Medieval farming, where fields were divided by ridges and furrows. These selions were the raised beds of their day; used in the main grain growing areas of England, they provided good drainage for the grain with moister conditions for other crops in the furrows. Evidence of the ridge and furrow system can be seen in some fields today, and this farming method is still used in the village of Laxton in my native Nottinghamshire.

These mid-calf length socks are started with a twisted rib cuff, with the lace pattern established on the leg. This lace pattern is stretchy, providing a comfortable fit. The socks have a traditional slip stitch heel flap, which can easily be adjusted to give a good fit for the heel and gusset. The lace patterning is continued onto the instep when working the gusset. The sock can then be adjusted for preference and fit by working the top of the foot in either lace or stocking stitch before working the toe shaping and grafting the remaining stitches together.

Instructions include information on adjusting the heel flap and gusset as well as foot length. The pattern includes seven sizes to fit from babies to adults. Note the first and second sizes are worked on the same number of stitches with adjustments to length, the heel flap and gusset.

Selion is designed with mirror image patterning using Option 1 instructions for the first sock, and Option 2 instructions for the second; the socks are interchangeable, so you can switch the feet you wear them on for a different look. If you choose, the same charts can be used for both socks, so the ridges flow in the same direction. If making more than one pair with the same yarn, this interchangeability means the socks can easily be matched into wearable pairs.
