Special thanks to Alainn Yarns for providing their Wanderer DK yarn for the sample.

This design is the fifth of a series—twelve cowls in sequence knitting for 2024. This month, we’re working a simple {k6, p2} sequence, worked over a multiple of 8 stitches plus 4. The additional 4 stitches shift the sequence to create a 2 x 2 garter rib stitch pattern with strong vertical lines, instead of the spiral we saw last month. (This month’s pattern is still a spiral—it just doesn’t look much like one!) You can begin knitting the sequence immediately after casting on, but I’ve added plain 2 x 2 ribbing to keep the top and bottom edges from curling. In June, we’ll work a flat rectangle and seam it in an interesting way to shape the cowl. Traditional instructions and a chart are included in the pattern, following the sequence knitting instructions.

The sample measures 54.5 cm in circumference x 21.5 cm tall (21.5” x 8.5”); instructions are provided in the pattern to help you re-size the project to suit your needs.

This is an easy project. The techniques you will need to know, or learn, to complete the cowl are:

  • cast on and bind off;
  • knit and purl;
  • working in the round.
