Seto Hat
The pattern belongs to My Roots Series; a pattern series with the theme of our Estonian knitting folklore.
This design contains our traditional old mitten pattern from Setomaa. This hat is named after the people of Setomaa and celebrates the shared heritage between the knitting tradition of today and our history.
For centuries, every girl and woman living in the small territory of Estonia, on the shores of the Baltic Sea, has known how to knit. One of my childhood memories is of my grandma knitting on dark and long winter nights. Most of the time she knit mittens with rich colors and details. But so far I have been afraid of this style, our stranded colorwork. It seemed to me so complicated and sophisticated. But now, here I am and so proud of myself for crossing this boundary.
This quick and easy hat is a fabulous way to learn stranded knitting. The hat is worked in the round from the bottom up and topped off with a pompom (completely optional).
Size, sample hat longer version:
Brim cirumference is approximately 46cm/18“ unstretched, blocked. Hat stretches to fit a 54-57cm/ 21-22.5“ head circumference.
Length from brim to crown – 26cm/10“
Two lengths are provided: shorter and longer. Follow the chart headlines.
Yarn for sample hat:
For hat body: Two shades of Jamieson and Smith 2 Ply Jumper weight, 100% Shetland wool, 115m/ 125yards per 25g/0.88ounces.
Yarn MC: Approx. 1.5 skein, 160m/174yards. Shown in colorways 29 Mix (dark green);
Yarn CC: Approx. 0.8 skein, 100m/109yards. Shown in colorway 23 (bright yellow).
Or other 4 Ply weight/ fingering yarn.
For (optional) pompom:
Approx 25m/27.5 yards of MC.
Other tools: 1 stitch marker, tapestry needle for weaving in ends, blocking tools, pompom maker
Skills Required: Knitting in the round, stranded colorwork
Needles: 2.5mm (US 1 ½ ) and 3.00mm (US 2 ½ ) circular needles (at least 40 cm/16“ long) and DPNs (or your preferred needles for working small circumferences in the round) for finishing the crown.
Use whatever size needles it takes you to get the right gauge. Needle sizes are recommendations only. Take time to save time and always use needle size necessary to achieve given gauge (match the tension).
Gauge: 30 sts and 31 rounds in 10cm/4” in pattern worked in the round with needle 3.00mm (US 2 ½), after washing and blocking.
You should always knit your swatch the same way that the pattern is knit. In this case - in the round. Block your swatch as you will your finished garment and allow it to dry fully before measuring.
And thank you my dear test knitters. Without you, this pattern isn’t here ….
