Shallow
Inspired by the way Claire Fraser (Outlander) wears her shawls, I wanted to create a shawl that I could wrap around myself and fasten at my back yet keep it small enough to wear around my neck as well, but I find that that balance of length vs size isn’t available everywhere.
So I used a technique to make the wingspan wider, while keeping the triangle shallow. I also created a puff stitch spine with filet and solid sections.
I’ve written this pattern with two yarn types in mind, one being Scheepjes Metropolis, a fingering weight wool yarn, and the other with Scheepjes Whirl, one of the most popular and beautiful yarns available. The pattern will use either three skeins of Metropolis (or 150g of another fingering weight yarn) and a full cake of Whirl. There are specific instructions to cater for both yarn types.
Gauge is really very important for this design, especially when using Sheepjes Whirl. If your tension is much looser than mine, I recommend following the instructions for the Metropolis version of the pattern.
The stitch count is also very important. The shawl looks very simple to make, but the stitch placement can be a little bit tricky until you get the hang of it, so I recommend using stitch markers at regular intervals as the rows grow to keep track.
Included is a chart to show the construction, and a second chart to show the stitch placement at the spine.
