The multi-coloured yarn in this scarf is a beautiful handspun yarn sent to me by Worldweaver as part of my ongoing adventure in designing with handspun yarns. I had enough yarn for a scarf, and decided to work stripes of eyelet mesh and garter stitch. The mesh is also worked on a garter stitch background, which makes the scarf reversible. I worked the stitch patterns in stripes of three different widths, so the stripes “tumble” through the stitch patterns in an interesting, rhythmic way, while the multi-coloured yarn adds additional interest. Consider knitting this design in a solid or tonal, semi-solid colourway for a more “subdued” finished project.

The techniques you will need to know--or learn--in order to complete this project are:

  • cast on and bind off--the double chain (or Chinese Waitress) methods were used in the sample;
  • knit;
  • slip a stitch purlwise;
  • yarn over;
  • ssk decrease;
  • k2tog decrease.
