Shetland Fingerless Mitts
I found these mitts to be a popular item on a recent trip to Shetland. They are designed in the traditional manner without a thumb gusset. These mitts are a medium using a 2.75mm needle (circumference 8”) – for a small, use a 2-2.25 mm needle for a gauge closer to 9 sts per inch (circumference will be 7”) and for a large, use a 3-3.25mm for a gauge of 7 sts per inch (circumference will be 9”). For a slightly tighter cuff, work in K1, P1 ribbing instead of K2, P2.
MATERIALS NEEDED: yarn used was Jamieson and Smith Jumper Weight, but any fingering weight yarn will work. Color A (main color) – approx. 80 yds, color B approx. 40 yds, Colors C, D, and E were oddments – see chart for specific colors used. Colors A and B are the background colors – they should both be either light or dark, if they are light, keep colors C, D, and E dark for contrast, and vice versa, set of 2.75 mm double pointed needles, oddment of contrasting scrap yarn for thumb.
