Shetland Star Mitts and Gloves
Although these star motifs are Norwegian in origin, these mitts and gloves were designed to go along with our Shetland Tree and Star pullover and cardigan. They are designed in the traditional manner without a thumb gusset.
NOTES: Motifs I used are from ‘Alice Starmore’s Book of Fair Isle Knitting’. You have 3 design options – fingerless mitts, finger mitts, or gloves with 4 star and 2 palm options. Where there is only one set of instructions, it applies to all 3 styles. Sizes are varied by changing the needle size (see gauge section). The pattern is written with 2 background colors and 5 star contrast colors, but this pattern is meant as a template – it is common practice to repeat your BC1 in the motif, eliminating one of your contrast colors, or alternate your background colors and keep your motif solid (glove top row, left)…the possibilities are endless!
GAUGE AND SIZING: The size of the Mitts/Gloves can be varied by changing the needle size – for a small, use a 2 or 2.25mm for a gauge of approx. 9 sts per 1” (7” circumference), for a medium a 2.5 or a 2.75mm for a gauge of 8 sts per 1” (8” circumference) and for a large a 3 or 3.25mm for a gauge of 7 sts per 1” (9” circumference) in stockinette st (in circular stranded knitting).
MATERIALS NEEDED: yarn used was Jamieson and Smith Jumper Weight, but any fingering weight yarn will work. Yarn quantities – approx. 160 yds BC1 if doing gloves (100 yds if doing mitts) and approx. 100 yds BC2, oddments for CCA, CCB, CCC, CCD and CCE (see chart for specific colors used), set of double pointed needles for size desired (see notes in Gauge and Sizing), oddments of contrasting scrap yarn for thumb and placing sts on hold for fingers.
