Shetland Wheel
Shetland Wheel is also part of the Shetland Fusion Ebook
Pattern is both written and charted.
A circular shawl made up of short row wedges for the center. The center is then surrounded by a lace border and finished with a lace edging.
Many years ago, I bought the book Martha Waterman’s Knitted Lace Shawls. There is one small section, barely two paragraphs, that talks about circular lace shawls that are started from a short-rowed wedge center. This center is made up of 16 lace patterned wedges. I tried out quite a few different patterns in the wedges, trying to find the look that I wanted and eventually settled on the center you see here. I hope that you enjoy knitting this unusual center.
There is no wrap and turn involved in the short rows. The turning stitches are simply slipped (with yarn in front) and then knit back along on the 44 rows of each wedge.
The pattern is both written and charted. The Wheel is shown in light fingering (2 colours of Brook Farm) and laceweight (Yorkshire Lace - from my stash) wools.
Materials:
Fingering Weight Shawl - 4.0mm US#6, 24, 32 and 40 inch circ needles (straight needles could be used for the center short-rows), 1700m Light fingering – main, 600m – contrast, sample was knit with Brook Farm, waste yarn for provisional cast-on, 3.5mm hook, markers etc. If using 2 colours you will need 1500m of 1 and 600m of the other.
Lace weight shawl – 3.5mm US#4, 24, 32 and 40 inch circ needles (straight needles could be used for the center short-rows), 2200 m lace weight yarn, sample was knit with Yorkshire Lace, a Falkland Merino, waste yarn for provisional cast-on 3.5mm hook, markers etc.
Gauge: not crucial in lace – once blocked approx. 22 to 24 sts in 4 inches
Size (Dimensions): Diameter – lace, 62 inches across; fingering, 66 inches across
Note - Yorkshire Lace is no longer available, but it was 800m to 100 grams of Falkland Merino
