This is a small, felted bag worked in three pieces: the front, the back, and the base and sides together. All pieces of the bag require knitting using the fairisle method. Once sewn together this bag needs to be put through a washing machine to achieve the felted effect.

Instructions for this bag are provided in both written and charted format.

Materials List A lot of people believe that hand knitted bags are very expensive to knit, so I’ve put together a list of materials that I used to show you just how inexpensive making your own Shoji Bag can be. Yarn: £8 (4x Drops Nepal) Strap: £4.00 (2 Black Belts bought from Primark) Lining: £1 (Fabric Remnants bought on sale from Mandors) Pattern:£3.50

The trellis motif on this bag was inspired by the work of Scottish architect and designer, Charles Rennie Mackintosh. Mackintosh was born in Glasgow in 1868 and through the development of his own style he designed some of the most beautiful buildings Glasgow has to offer, which include The Glasgow School of Art, Mrs Cranston’s Tea Rooms, Scotland Street School and Queen’s Cross Church.
He was well known for his Japanese-inspired forms and it is from these that I have taken my inspiration for the design on this bag. I was also encouraged by The Yarn Cake in Glasgow and their knitwear design competition, The Glasgow School of Yarn!
