Shrugs and Kisses
Any standard gauge machine with two beds may be used. “Two beds” includes Japanese style machines with ribbers and European double bed machines. The sample was made using Cancun yarn and the Superba machine. Aim for a stockinette gauge of 7 stitches/ 10 rows per inch. It is not critical to match gauge perfectly so most fingering and sport weight yarns are realistic options. Smooth yarn is preferable to slubby or very fuzzy yarn to display the design. The pattern is given in 2 main sizes with suggestions for customizing them at the end of the pattern. The first size will come out about 68” long along the hem edge, the 2nd size about 74” long. If your row gauge varies from the pattern, it’s OK, just be aware that the length will vary along with it. The smaller size is best for small to average ladies in both height and girth. Those who are either taller or bigger around than average will enjoy the larger size more. Hip size need not be considered for this shawl because the garment doesn’t come near the hips. So consider bust and shoulder size. A lot more ladies will seem to be “average” when hips are not included. Generally the first size will fit women of average height up to about a 42” bust. The second size should be used for those who are taller or larger in the bust. Naturally, there is room for personal taste based on how the garment will be worn and the desired look also. The length from the top of the shawl at the back of the neck to lower edge of the shawl at the center back is about 17” which will be a little below the waist on most women. One cone of yarn will make either size. The stitch size is stockinette size even though we are actually knitting ribbing so expect to use more weight than usual to achieve success. Directions are based on the carriage beginning at the right side of the work.
