Simple Aran Socks
These are the perfect “My First Socks” – a gentle introduction to the world of sock knitting. Designed to be simple and satisfying, they’re knitted in aran weight yarn on 4.5mm double-pointed needles, which means fewer stitches on the needles and quicker progress than traditional 4 ply socks. Win-win!
They knit up fast, making them a lovely project for a cosy weekend – ideal for wearing in wellies on a blustery walk or for snuggling on the sofa with your knitting, a favourite drink and your go-to podcast or boxset.
CONSTRUCTION
Knitted on double pointed needles in the round in one piece from the cuff down.
TECHNIQUES USED
Cast on, knit, purl, double pointed needles, in the round, decreasing, grafting stitches together. Optional but recommended to create the feeling of joy when joining your stitches: three needle cast off.
YARN
One 100g hank each of WYS Croft Shetland Aran (solids) in shade A & WYS Croft Shetland Aran (tweeds) in shade B.
100% Shetland wool, 166m/182yds per 100g
This is enough to make at least two pairs when swapping B for A and A for B on the second pair.
SUGGESTED KNITTING NEEDLES
Four double pointed 4.5mm.
GAUGE (tension)
18 stitches and 24 rows to 10cm square over rib pattern. I obtained this gauge with 4.5mm needles.
It is important to obtain gauge so do swatch and change your needle size to achieve the correct gauge if you need to.
SIZE
to fit UK size 5 or desired foot length as highlighted in the pattern.
