I had promised to knit a new hat for my longtime gaming buddy, Tony, and after much thought, I came up with the perfect design: the Simple Slipped Textured Hat. His old, trusty hat had seen better days, and it was time to upgrade his winter wardrobe. Knowing Tony’s love for green and purple, I dove into my yarn stash, which is packed with an abundance of greens (thanks to my husband’s obsession) and a healthy supply of purple (thanks to my own love for the colour).
Among the many vibrant options, Tony immediately gravitated toward a green skein I had hand-dyed years ago during one of my yarn-dyeing experiments. This beautiful yarn featured a rich blend of greens that evoked the feeling of early spring woods—a description Tony shared with me that perfectly captured its essence. The next challenge was finding the ideal texture that would complement this variegated yarn, showcasing its colours while adding depth and interest to the final project. That’s when the idea for the Simple Slipped Textured Hat came to life.
This pattern combines easy-to-learn slipped stitches with a simple yet stunning texture that adds just the right amount of visual and tactile interest. It’s perfect for beginner knitters looking to try something a little different while creating a cosy, one-of-a-kind hat. I’m so excited to share this pattern with you, and I hope it inspires you to create something just as special as Tony’s new favourite hat!
Worked from the bottom up, this versatile hat pattern allows you to craft a perfectly fitting hat seamlessly in the round. The construction involves starting with the brim, progressing to the body, and culminating with shaping the crown. As you approach the final stages of the crown, you’ll need to switch from using 16” / 40 cm circular needles to either the magic loop method or double-pointed needles, depending on your preference for tackling smaller circumferences.
