From Norway, with love.

This pair of mittens shows my love for everything about the Shetland knitting tradition: the wool, the colours, the Fair Isle patterns and a little lace on a garter stitch background. I enjoyed putting the peerie patterns together and use their increase in size as a way of shaping the mittens, without the traditional Norwegian thumb gusset. I also enjoyed playing with the different colour combinations. The possibilities are endless.

The name Skålavåg is the old Norse name for Scalloway, a Shetland village with a special connection to Norway: it was the home base for “The Shetland Bus”, part of the Norwegian resistance against the German occupation of Norway during the Second World War.

This pattern was first published in the Shetland Wool Week Annual 2018.
