Notes from the Designer:

When my husband and I went to Alaska for our honeymoon, one of the things we were hoping to enjoy was the beautiful colors of the Northern Lights dancing across the sky. Unfortunately, we did not get to witness that amazing phenomenon, but I wanted to commemorate the joy of our honeymoon by creating a shawl that represented Alaska and its beauty. Sky Dance is my interpretation of the fleeting wonders of the night sky.

  • Click here to watch a video demonstrating the Invisible Double Knitting Cast On, how to work double knit stitches, as well as one version of the slip stitch edge.
  • The sample shown used approximately 3,130 yds/2,862 m total: Color A: 1,565 yds/1,431 m and Color B: 1,565 yds/1,431 m.
  • Sky Dance is knit using the double knitting technique, where two fabrics are knit as one. Both sides are equally interesting, since the back is the exact reverse in colors as the front. Video tutorials for cast on, bind off, and finished edges are included. The pattern is a 100-row repeat. Fringe may be added to the ends, if desired.
  • To keep edge stitches neat, the first stitch pair of every row needs to be worked in a special way. For RS rows, B is in back, and A is in front. Work first stitch of double knit pair by knitting with B. Then work second stitch of pair by bringing B to front and catching it, while purling with A, keeping B behind A. Likewise, for WS rows, A is in back, and B is in front. Work first stitch of double knit pair by knitting with A. Then work second stitch of pair by bringing A to front and catching it, while purling with B, keeping A behind B. (See Slip Stitch Edge for Double Knitting video for further instruction.)
  • Last stitch pairs are slipped as follows: bring both yarns to the back, and slip the first stitch of the pair. Then on RS rows, bring A to front, and slip second stitch of pair. On WS rows, bring B to front, and slip second stitch of pair.
  • As an option, stitch markers may be placed every ten stitches to help with keeping count.
  • Repeat rows between red lines on chart.
