ABOUT
The Smithfield Scarf uses an engaging shell stitch pattern to bring depth and texture to your fabric, with a playful fringe included as a finishing touch. This luxuriously warm scarf will keep you stylish and snug all winter long.

MATERIALS
Yarn: Super Bulky—Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick & Quick in colorway “Slate”

• 100% Cotton
• 106 yds (97 m) per 6 oz (170 g) skein
• Find this yarn on lionbrand.com or visit yarnsub.com to find comparable substitutes available in your region

Yardage: 5 skeins or 515 yds (471 m)

Yarn Substitution: Substitute Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick & Quick with any similar super bulky weight (category #6) yarn that matches gauge. Most fiber contents will work fine in this project. Note that super bulky weight is often referred to as “super chunky” in the U.K., or “16-ply” in Australia.

Hooks Required:
Main Gauge Hook: Size U.S. N/15 (10 mm) or size needed to obtain gauge
Border Hook: Size U.S. K/10½ (6.5 mm) or size that is approximately 3-4 mm smaller than your Main Gauge hook

Notions: Tapestry needle, scissors, an object measuring approximately 6” (15 cm) in length to wrap yarn around to create fringe (such as your phone, a book, a piece of cardboard, etc.)

FINISHED MEASUREMENTS
Finished scarf (blocked) measures approximately 11.5” (29 cm) in width and 76” (193 cm) in length, not including fringe.

Note: Scarf measures approximately 9.5” (24 cm) in width and 65” (165 cm) in length pre-blocking and pre-border.

GAUGE
Gauge: 1 full shell repeat across = 3.5” (9 cm) wide; 4 rows = 4.5“ (11 cm) high using Main Gauge hook

For Swatch:
Ch 18, follow pattern up to and including Row 4. Block and dry swatch before measuring.

If your blocked swatch is smaller than these measurements, go up a hook size. If your blocked swatch is larger than these measurements, go down a hook size. Because of the lacy nature of this stitch, your work will likely grow substantially with blocking.

PATTERN NOTES
Skill Level: Easy
Stitch Counts: Stitch counts are listed after each row.
Right Side: This stitch pattern is reversible; however, the side facing you as you crochet the border is intended to be worn as the “right side”.
Turning Chain: The turning chain does not count as a stitch anywhere in this pattern.
Pattern Multiple: To adjust the width of your scarf, the beginning chain must be a multiple of 8+2.
Construction: This scarf is worked widthwise until reaching your desired length. Optional fringe is added last.
Blocking: Blocking is crucial to this project as the fabric looks wonky and messy without it. See the image on the next page for a comparison of pre- and post-blocking! Do not skip this step.
