Yarn Choice: These pieces can be knit in Sport, DK or even Light Worsted Weight yarn…. So if you are working from stash or a delicious yarn you bought ONE skein of at a Fiber Fair… try it out! DK is the yarn I would suggest, but I have made this in the other yarns as well and it will work.
INDIE DYER YARNS:
sample 1: Jilly & Kiddles, Ideal DK, color Tadpole, 100g, 225m (DK weight)
sample 2: Spun Ware Over the Rrainbow, Sport, color Groovy, 100g, 256m (Sport weight)
COMMERCIAL YARNS:
sample A: Schoppel, Gradient, color #2262, 100g, 260m (DK weight)
sample B: Schoppel, Gradient, color #2306, 100g, 260m (DK weight)

Needles:
FOR MITTS - round (magic loop) OR DPN’s - US 04’s (3.5 mm)
FOR COWL - US 06’s (4.0 mm) rounds recommended.

GAUGE: Gauge is not crucial, except for the need of buying enough yarn and for exact sizing. Gauge is more important to the MITTS, less for the Cowl. Mitts will LOOK SMALL, they stretch!
MITTS: using US 04’s (3.5 mm) in stocking knit
24 sts to 4” &
34 rows to 4”
COWL: using US 06’s (4.0 mm) in stocking knit
20 sts to 4” &
32 rows to 4”

MITTS:
width at knuckles SMALL (5.33”), MEDIUM (6”), LARGE (6.67”) with about 1” negative ease.
Medium should fit most average adult women. FINISHED Mitts look SMALL, they have a lot of stretch!
COWL: Height- 6-7” depending on your BLOCK
Length- 20” Minimum, to fit over head and double as ear band.
Or as long as you wish.

Notions:
needle or hook to tuck in ends, stitch markers
FOR COWL ONLY: Crochet Hook & sensible scrap yarn* for provisional Cast on.(something in a different color than the working yarn & not fluffy or splitty or acrylic or a one ply. A yarn that will be easy to recognize and remove when it come time to join the work at the end of the cowl.)

HINT: If making both pieces, make the mitts first. Then you can extend the cowl length, if you desire, and use ALL your yarn.

MITTS - Non-standard construction

• I would recommend using Magic Loop or 3 DPN’s in the magic loop style (knitting it flat, across palm & back of hand).
• Regular DPN’s, as many as you like would be my next choice for making the mitts.
• You start by making the thumb top, put that on holder/DPN’s/waste yarn
• Then they are knit top down, cast on at the top, finger opening. Thumb is added in and knit on. Instead of increasing for the thumb, you will decrease to achieve the thumb gusset.
• Ending with the cuff. This is a longer Cuff, meant to cover and keep your pulse points warm and hold the mitts on well.
• The mitts will look SMALL. They are meant to stretch and be fitted. I do not like baggy-gappy mitts. They will also stretch some with wear and not bounce fully back (will be smallest the first time you wear them).

COWL - The piece starts out flat with a bias and is seamlessly joined, using the Kitchener Join. There are a couple ways to make this wonderful, try anyone you like! It can be bound off and seamed or you may start with a Provisional Cast On and then use a Kitchener closing at the end. You might use a 3 needles bind off if you do not like a Kitchener join. The size listed is about as small as an average person can pop over their head. It is not baggy or loose and can double as a topless hat/ear band/wide hair band. It would also be nice longer, so it could be doubled, etc. I challenged myself to create something that, combined with the mitts, used only one skein of yarn. Feel free and encouraged to make it bigger.
