With a new skein of Cascade Yarn’s Eco Duo in hand, and while sitting on the beach on Fire Island in early fall, I was thinking about creating a pattern for the upcoming winter season, while watching the shifting sands and feeling sad that the summer had ended. The colors in the yarn matched those of the beach, and the ripples and little hills formed by the wind inspired this hat and cowl duo.

The simple and quick-working cowl is knit in the round and worked lengthwise. The versatile piece, which is 89 inches long, is triple wrapped for extra warmth. It can also be worn as a wrap when doubled and draped around the shoulders.

The hat has plenty of length to fold the brim a few times, providing extra protection against the cold. You can also wear it long and slouchy.

The cowl and hat together use 4 skeins and weigh 398 gm. Each skein is 100 gm. To ensure having enough yarn, I recommend purchasing 5 skeins. (Fingerless gloves or an extra hat with leftover yarn?)
