After Hamlet follows his father’s ghost up the battlements, Horatio and Marcellus discuss the possible meanings of the apparition. Marcellus’s assertion that “something is rotten in the state of Denmark” is a bit of an understatement, but Horatio with the scholar’s outlook reminds him that “Heaven will direct” their fates. I find this idea of a fated conclusion a bit simplistic, but as Hamlet tells us, there are more things in heaven and earth than Horatio’s philosophy can dream up.

Skill Level: Intermediate due to cables, lace work, and sock construction
Materials: Approx. 320-400 yds or 290-365 m of sock yarn. The socks pictured are a size large and used approx. 375 yds of Madeline Tosh Sock in the color “Oak.”
Needles: US 1 (2.25mm) sock needles (pattern is written for either DPNs or Magic Loop)
Tools: Cable needle, if necessary; tapestry needle, scissors, and tape measure
Sizing: Small (Medium, Large, Extra-Large) size socks measure 7(8,9,10) inches in circumference. Leg height, ankle depth, and foot length are all adjustable to fit and preference. Note: These socks run tight, so if you are in doubt about sizing, go up rather than down.
Gauge: 8 stitches and 12 rounds per inch (2.5cm) in stockinette stitch
