The Song of Avalon Cowl merges easy-to-follow cable and lace stitch pattern with gentle shaping, forming a silhouette reminiscent of medieval romance. Designed in worsted weight yarn, it’s worked flat from a narrow edge to a wide flare, then seamed. Thoughtful details, including slip-stitch edges and a ribbed border, highlight the eye-catching texture.

Finished measurements
14”/35 cm wide; 24”/60 cm long.
Measurements are taken after blocking.

Yarn
Worsted weight yarn (approximate amount): 260 yds/237 m.
Miss Babs Yarns Big Silk (60% Merino Wool, 40% Silk; 540 yds/494 m in 250 g): Blackwatch, 1 skein.
Note: The cowl uses about 1/2 of the skein so there is enough yarn in one skein to make 2 cowls.

Needles
Size US 8/5 mm: straight or 24-32”/60-80 cm circular or size to obtain gauge.
While a gauge is not critical for this project, a different gauge can affect the final size and yardage.

Notions
Stitch markers, cable needle, 4 removable markers (of two different colors), tapestry needle.

Gauge
26 stitches and 26 rows = 4”/10 cm in cable pattern.

Notes
The cowl is worked flat beginning at the narrow edge (center of back neck) to the wide end with increases along the right side edge. The border is worked in ribbing.

Difficulty: Intermediate.

Pattern Style: both written and charted instructions using common knitting abbreviations. The cable/lace pattern is written and charted.
