Combining warm, squishy garter stitch with an i-cord edging gives a crisp finish to a simple cosy cowl. Opt for a stylish neutral or go wild with colours. Six buttons give an option to accessorise- keep it simple or pick out some showstoppers.
Needles: 5.0 mm / US size 8 needles for working flat.
Yarn: 80 g heavy aran weight yarn, 166 m per 100 g.
Sample shown in A little bit Sheepish British Bluefaced Leicester Aran; 100% wool; 166 m / 181 yd per 100 g, in “Minerva”.
Notions: Cable needle, tapestry needle, six 15 mm buttons.
Skills: Cast on, working flat, knit, increases, cast off, weaving in ends.
Gauge: 19 stitches and 32 rows over 10 cm / 4” in garter stitch, blocked but un-stretched. Gauge is not critical for this project, but different gauges may affect the size and yardage used.
Sizing: Pattern as written creates a cowl 13 cm / 5” deep and 50 cm / 19 ½” around. The depth and circumference can be adjusted by working more, or fewer, increases and adding to the straight garter section.
