Sorrell the Silky Anteater
This pattern is exclusive to the Folk & Sundry Patreon Membership until October 2026
If you sit quietly for a while in the right part of the jungle, you may just come across this pair of bug-hunters. Sorrel the Silky Anteater, and her red-eyed tree frog companion spend their days slowly and quietly. Any time the frog might suggest they rush, Sorrel replies “slow is is steady, steady is fast.”
Tiny, fluffy, and found high in the treetops of Central and South America, the Silky Anteater (also called the pygmy anteater) is the smallest of all anteaters. They’re nocturnal, and arboreal (spending most of their lives in trees). Despite their delicate look, they’re master climbers with a strong prehensile tail, and large front claws. Their diets are made almost entirely of ants, eating thousands per night!
This 24 page Amigurumi crochet pattern in US terms is filled with colour photos (36), and instructions to make sure your anteater turns out just right. Also included in the download is a printer-friendly black and white version without photos. Instructions include a detailed colourwork silky anteater, her frog friend, and a firefly lantern/bug catching jar. With a 2.75mm hook and DK weight yarn, she ends up roughly 9.5cm tall/22cm long (depending on gauge), and is a perfect size for a desk companion or to fit in a child’s backpack (to join in all adventures!).
Key Details:
➔ Size: Approximately 9.5cm tall/22cm long when made with DK yarn and a 2.75 mm hook.
➔ Yarn & Hook: Designed for DK weight yarn, but you can use another weight as long as it’s consistent. Gauge isn’t critical, but keep it tight. Example images use Classic 8PLY Wool, and Rustic Tweed 8ply from Bendigo Woollen Mills.
➔ Skill Level: Intermediate-Advanced. Small rounds, and plenty of shaping! Everything is clearly labelled and photos are included to guide you through any complicated bits, but this pattern requires concentration and a fair bit of trusting the process. A video with instructions on how to change colours quickly and easily is also included with the pattern.

➔ Yarn - The pattern is made for DK weight yarn, but being Amigurumi, gauge isn’t super important (as long as it’s tight), and you can easily switch it out for a different weight. Just make sure all the yarn used is the same weight, and it should still work. I’ve used Classic & Rustic Tweed 8PLY Wool from Bendigo Woollen Mills for my anteater.

➔ 2.75mm crochet hook to keep the stitches nice and tight. Depending on your yarn you may need to go up or down sizes to match.
➔ Stuffing.
➔ Sewing pins to keep things in place as you stitch them together (not absolutely necessary, but can help keep things from sliding around).
➔ Stitch marker to keep track of rounds (I use an extra little piece of yarn).
➔ Yarn needle (or smaller if you prefer to attach pieces with thread).
➔ Scissors.
