Sour Cherry Pie Shawl
About the Pattern
We planted a sour cherry tree in our small urban backyard specifically for making sour cherry pie. The first bite of pie tells me summer has officially started. And when sour cherries are cooked with sugar, not only do they make the most delicious pies, they also turn the most glorious shade of bright pink. Almost exactly the same colour as the colour of the yarn I chose for the border of this shawl.
Sizing / Measurements
Pattern comes in one size. Finished measurements after blocking: Wingspan = 66” (168 cm) and depth at centre = 16” (41 cm).
Yarn / Yardage
Approx. 390 yards / 360 m of fingering weight yarn for the body of the shawl and 340 yards / 310 m of fingering weight yarn for the border.
Gauge
18 sts and 32 rows over 4” (10 cm) in stockinette with 4.5 mm (US 7) needles.
Notions
Tapestry needle, crochet hook for provisional cast-on.
Difficulty
Suitable for an intermediate knitter who is familiar with provisional cast-on, wrap and turn short-rows, and how to work an applied lace border. Links to helpful video tutorials are provided in the pattern.
Pattern Notes
This shawl is worked in three different directions. First, the top edge is cast-on provisionally and the body of the shawl is knit from the top down with its shape provided by short-rows. Second, the knitted-on lace border is worked around the bottom edge of the shawl. Third, the top edge is finished with an I-cord bind-off. Pattern has been test-knit and tech-edited.
Special thanks to my test-knitters: hexe1isora, whovis, and MrsJoyS; technical editing by kephrenknitting.
