This is a very light and airy afghan, which could also be used as a hanging or doubled over and used as a shawl.

(It might be seen as a partner to Square Snowflake)

It is surface crochet on a very open crochet grid. It can be made using any yarn and hook. The yarn chosen will determine the finished size. The photo shows green surface crochet on a black grid. Behind the grid is a black backing.

You can make your own grid or use any fabric with squares. The red version is on non-slip matting.

It is a representation of a ‘space-filling curve’. There are several curves similar to this. Technically, this one is a Hilbert open Peano curve.

Theoretically these curves cover every point on the surface until nothing is left. This can be imagined in mathematical theory but does not work in real life.

This is not a conventional pattern. If you can crochet at all you can make this.

Note: Our crochet patterns use UK terminology.
