I first designed this scarf before I opened the Purl &Jane Studio, as part of a pattern book. I’d tried several variations before I finally settled on this stitch pattern – and ever since, I’ve been a little bit addicted to it!

It wasn’t until two years later, after I opened the studio, that I began to see the real joy of this design: your Spencer Scarf creations. The shades you chose and how they worked together were – and still are – endlessly fascinating. No matter how you think colours are going to behave, you never really know until you knit them, and that’s what makes it so exciting.

Like all my designs, the Spencer Scarf is simple to knit but looks impressive. The stitch pattern works beautifully with the three-row stripe, creating a design that looks far more complicated than it is.

I also like all my scarves to work on both sides, because really, scarves don’t have a “right” or “wrong” side. With the Spencer, you get the smooth stitches on one side and a lovely texture on the other.

CONSTRUCTION
Knitted flat in one piece from the bottom up.

TECHNIQUES USED
Cast on, knit, purl, striped pattern, slip stitch technique sometimes called mosaic colour work, cast off.

YARN
One 100g hank each of P &J Yorkshire Yarn Bluefaced Leicester DK in shade A, shade and shade C.
100% Bluefaced Leicester wool, 230m/251yds per 100g.

SUGGESTED KNITTING NEEDLES
4mm.

GAUGE (tension)
28 stitches and 30 rows to 10cm square over linen weave pattern. I obtained this gauge with 4mm needles.
It is important to obtain gauge so do swatch and change your needle size to achieve the correct gauge if you need to.

FINISHED MEASUREMENTS
Approx. 19cm (wide) x 178cm (long).
