The simple stripes of this tote are interrupted by bold, contrasting spike stitches in a geometric pattern. This project is inspired by some geometric tapestry crochet projects I came across, but I wanted to see if I could achieve the same effect with spike stitches.

Notes: This bag is worked with a small hook to ensure a sturdy, dense fabric that can stand up to the spike stitches. If this makes stitching too difficult, feel free to go up a hook size.

Carry the unused colors up the inside of the bag as you go if you’re lining the bag. If you choose not to line the bag, fasten off each color after each stripe.

Working sc in the round creates a natural bias. To correct the slant, simply skip the first sc in each row and work the last sc in the skipped st of the previous row. This should realign your seam. You may need to do this every 4 rows or so.

Notions: stitch markers or straight pins; .5 yard lining for fabric (optional); tapestry needle; sewing needle; sewing thread that matches lining (if using); 2 bag handles, 12” (30.5 cm) long.
