This doll is inspired by the spoon-billed sandpiper, a Class I endangered species in Korea.
True to its name, the spoon-billed sandpiper is a small shorebird with a broad, flattened bill. In the past, it was observed migrating along the tidal flats of East Asia, including the Korean Peninsula. However, due to tidal-flat reclamation, coastal development, and habitat destruction, its population has declined sharply, and it is now an extremely rare species worldwide.
In particular, the spoon-billed sandpiper depends on specific stopover sites along its migratory route, making it ecologically vulnerable enough that the loss of even a single tidal flat can threaten its survival. The presence of this small bird is directly linked to the health of tidal-flat ecosystems.
This pattern was created as part of an effort to remember endangered species in Korea and to reflect on the natural landscapes we are gradually losing.

Construction Notes
The spoon-billed sandpiper is worked flat from tail to head. The wing section is worked in horizontal colorwork. After the body is completed, stuff it and seam it using mattress stitch to create the three-dimensional shape. The bill and legs are worked separately and sewn onto the body.
