Before I leave the house to walk my little dog, Nancy, I usually grab a shawl, just in case. How adaptable is a shawl; smaller than a cardigan or sweater, easy to throw on, easy to pop into your bag, stylish, warm … the list goes on. I love that the varieties of yarn ensure that we can have a shawl that is right for every day, whatever the weather throws at us and whatever the season. Knit in Miss Babs Damask, Spring into Fall is going to be your best friend, it is an easy to knit, easy to wear, top down, wide triangular shawl with bands of ‘interrupted’ garter stitch that remind me of the fences around the fields where I live. Between these bands are lace panels; reminiscent of the flowers on the bank. The view on my walk changes, almost on a daily basis, flowers come and go, leaves emerge, flourish, colour and fall, the crops change from year to year. Some fields have cows, some sheep, some alternate between the two. No matter the season, there is always a walk and a shawl. Spring into Fall is perfect for the days when it is warming up from winter, those fabulous, acid green, days of spring and right through the summer to the fading light and warm colours of autumn. Obviously, if you live in a climate that is warm all year round then you will be experiencing the Spring into Fall weather daily!
REQUIREMENTS
Yarn: Two skeins of Miss Babs Damask 380m/100g.
Size: As written 83” (211cm) wide, 28” (71cm) deep before blocking and 88” (224cm) wide, 33” (84cm) deep after. Measurements taken using Miss Babs Damask. Note that measurements will differ depending on yarn, tension, blocking etc and these are therefore given as a guide only. I blocked very gently this time, merely stretching the damp shawl into the correct shape and leaving it to dry.
Circular Needles: 3.75mm (US5) and 4.5mm (US7) about 1m in length or needles to create a pleasing fabric – your fabric should not be too dense and should have good drape.
You will also need: Just under 250 size 5 Miyuki triangles or size 6 Miyuki/Toho Seed beads, stitch markers, needle, blocking pins and mats.
Gauge: The gauge achieved was 20 sts to 4” before blocking and 17 sts to 4” after a very gentle block, just smoothing the damp shawl out evenly and ensuring straight lines – measurement taken over the ‘interrupted’ garter stitch of Chart 2 using 3.75mm (US 5) needles. A looser gauge will result in additional yardage requirements.
You will find it useful to print your pattern on a colour printer, however, coloured pencils could be used to highlight aspects of the pattern.
The pattern is both fully written and charted throughout.
