Squirrel-in-the-Woods Mittens
No land mammals are native to Shetland, but Elli Stubenrauch found a way to introduce a stealth squirrel into her mittens. Beginning with a short section of scalloped corrugated ribbing that grades into an allover tree pattern, a squirrel is added to one mitten with duplicate stitches (you could just as easily add a bird or some other animal). Elli used side-seam thumb gussets that allow the mittens to be worn with equal comfort on either hand—display the squirrel on the palm of one hand or the back of the other. Knitted with worsted-weight wool at a dense gauge, these mittens will protect your hands from gale-force winds.
