The St. Johns Bridge in Portland, Oregon is an iconic suspension bridge that inspired this sweater design. The St. Johns Bridge pullover is a classy version of a comfy sweatshirt that is sure to get lots of wear.
St. Johns Bridge has an easy cable pattern that doesn’t even require a cable needle! And there’s hardly any purling because it’s worked from the inside as soon as the front neckline cable is finished.
Of course, there are also a ton of design options included in the pattern so you can make it your very own. Design options include 3 different sleeve lengths (short, ¾ and long), a split hemline, and a fun welt that can be worked at the neckline and sleeve cuffs for that perfect finishing touch. The welt really sets off the cable design but it also looks good without the welt for an easier knit.
St. Johns is worked top-down, seamlessly, and in-the-round so that it can be tried on to ensure a good fit and avoid unfortunate surprises at the end. The neck is cast on and short-row shaping lowers the front neckline. The yoke is worked in raglan method, incorporating the welt round and cable motif at the neckline, until sleeves are separated at the underarms.
After neck shaping and the front cable motif are complete, the remaining yoke, body, and sleeves are worked in the round from the inside (WS) to avoid purling.
The cable motif at each side of the body flows into the hem ribbing with an optional side split in the hemline.
