A short sleeved shrug in lightweight wool is a wonderfully handy garment for warm season wear, equally good for protecting your shoulders on sunny days and those cool evenings that catch up with you unexpectedly when you’re out and about enjoying the summer weather.

Inspired by the blue tiles and threads of steam escaping through tiny starlike openings in the roof of an Istanbul hammam (Turkish bath).

The square is designed to maintain the maker’s interest and keep a constant sense of making progress with its fascinating slipstitch rows alternating at the centre with a set of eyelet rows that keep the garment light and flexible.

The square itself is versatile in being equally suitable to use in a sampler style project with other similar sized squares or as a repeated motif for an item; such as a blanket or garment. Plus the pattern is entirely scalable so if you want a large blanket without seaming multiple squares you can simply add extra stitches and repeats until you have the size you want for the intended project.

Sizes: full bust 81.5 (91.5, 106.5, 117, 127, 137, 147.5, 162.5, 172.5, 183) cm / 32 (36, 42, 46, 50, 54, 58, 64, 68, 72)” I’ve used bust sizes as these are what most are familiar with however it doesn’t need to fit over your bust, it needs to fit your back and shoulders, so, if your shoulders and arms are large relative to your bust size, size up and if your bust is large relative to your arm and shoulder size, size down.

Tension: 29 sts x 43 rows = 10cm/4” over pattern stitch

Working method: square is knitted from bottom to top. Squares are sewn together to make the shrug and edgings added to the cuff and neckline openings.
